High School Graduation Requirements

Prescribed Course of Study: Students wishing to earn a high school diploma from an Aspire school shall successfully complete course work within a course of study in alignment with the UC/CSU A-G program and earn a designated number of credits.

Additional Requirement

In addition to the prescribed course of study and the participation in the above programs, each is expected to participate in certain college readiness activities, including:

 

  1. Students must apply for and take the prescribed college board entrance examinations.

 

  1. Students must apply and be accepted to a four-year university.

 

 

 

 

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC): The SBAC is a valid, reliable, and fair next-generation assessment aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English language arts/literacy (ELA/literacy) and mathematics. The system—which includes both summative assessments for accountability purposes and optional interim assessments for instructional use—will use computer adaptive testing technologies to the greatest extent possible to provide meaningful feedback and actionable data that teachers and other educators can use to help students succeed.

 

 

College/High School Courses taken in Middle School: College and High School courses that have been successfully completed with a grade of "C-" while the student is enrolled in the middle school shall have the course and grade shown on the high school transcript. While the course may count toward satisfaction of the prescribed course of study as defined above, the course/grade will not be included in GPA calculations.

 

 

 

Students At-Risk of not Graduating: Identification, Notification, and Support: Students in Grades 9-12 are identified as being at-risk of not meeting graduation requirements if they:

  • Have fewer than the specified number of credits (i.e., are credit-deficient)

a. Less than 60 semester credits by the end of grade 9;

b. Less than 120 semester credits by the end of grade 10; At the end of 10th grade, any sophomore who has earned fewer than 80 credits will be re-designated as 10th graders for the following year and placed on an automatic five-year graduation plan. 

c. Less than 180 semester credits by the end of grade 11;

d. Less than 210 credits by the end of semester 1 in grade 12.

  • Have not satisfactorily completed required coursework (a-g course design) (See "Prescribed Course of Student" above),
  • Have a cumulative 9-12 WGPA below 2.0 at the end of any reporting period,
  • Have not earned or are not enrolled in sufficient college credits (recommended 12 college credits) by the end of their 11th grade year for students in SY2011 or beyond,

 

Individual four-year graduation plans are created for each student by the Academic Counselors.  At the beginning of each semester, counselors review four-year plans and revise them as needed. Students at risk for not graduating will be given opportunities to recover courses which will be reflected in their revised four-year plan.  The plan for each student should specify how the student will have access to the courses needed for graduation requirements, the support the student will receive to help improve his/her grades and how and by whom the student's progress will be monitored.  Four-year plans are presented to and discussed with families during student led conferences.  

 

Differential Graduation and Competency Standard for Individuals With Exceptional Needs: The Board recognizes that differential proficiency standards may be appropriate for some students enrolled in Aspire's special education programs. The determination and development of appropriate differential proficiency standards will be included in the process of developing and managing the student's individualized education program. Students with exceptional needs may meet the regular district graduation standards to the extent that their abilities permit.
